Pack 291 - Position Specific Training

All leaders in Cub Scouts and scouting in general must undergo training. Training is also open to parents who wish to assist, even if they are not registered as a leader. The training provided helps ensure that leaders are prepared to deliver a fun, quality program for youth, and to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

This page covers position specific training. For details on other forms of training required or generally available, please see Adult/Leader Training.

Position Specific Training

All registered leaders must also complete position-specific training based on the roles they are fulfilling. Leader-specific training can be completed at various instructor-led events held by either the local council or district throughout the year, but is also available online via the BSA Learn Center--aka ScoutingU--available through my.scouting.org.

Position-specific training does not expire, and consists of three major topic areas:

  • Fast Start Orientation Training - This will acquaint you with basic information about your leadership job.

  • This is Scouting - An online interactive learning experience that is divided into six modules, introducing participants to several areas of the Scouting program.

  • Cub Scout Leader Specific Training - This is the nuts and bolts of the program, and focuses on the ingredients needed to make your program a success.

To complete the training online you can follow these procedures:

  1. Go to my.scouting.org and create an account, if you don't already have one. You’ll receive an email notification with your account information, including a member ID/reference number.

  2. From the my.scouting.org portal, click the image on the right labeled "BSA Learn Center".

  3. You will be redirected to the BSA Learn Center / ScoutingU website. Scroll down the page and click on the "Cub Scouting" image.

  4. Once in the site, use the "My Learning" and "Course Catalog" menus to add the appropriate learning plans to your account based on your role(s).

  5. Complete the three-part learning plan for each of your roles.
